Viper Man Dies After Being Shot by His Father

(Viper, KY) – A Perry County man has died after being shot by his father during an argument late Saturday night.  Around10:44 p.m.,  troopers and detectives with Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard responded to a residence on Plumbford Branch Road in the Viper community of Perry County, after receiving a call that a man had been shot once with a pistol.  The Perry County Ambulance Service also responded.

Upon their arrival, investigators discovered the body of 51 year old Tommy Rice in the living room of the residence, with a single gunshot wound to the head.  His father, Bernard Ray Rice, was transported to Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital for treatment of unrelated issues.  Further investigation determined that Bernard and Tommy Rice were involved in an argument at their residence.  At some point during the argument Bernard Rice retrieved a hand gun, and shot Tommy Rice once.

Bernard Rice was arrested and charged with one count of Manslaughter, 2nd Degree.  He is currently lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail.  An autopsy on the victim is scheduled to be performed today at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort.  This incident remains under investigation by Detective Randy Combs with KSP Post 13.
