Brendon D. Miller – Camen Media – March 19, 2015 – Louisville
The Louisville pod of games here at the KFC Yum Center began with a bang today as
South region 14 seed University of Alabama-Birmingham took down the 3 seed Iowa State 60 to
59 in a beauty of an opening game. Iowa State who had gained a reputation as the Comeback
Kids of the Big 12 Conference had the tables turned on them today as they were the ones who
jumped out to an early 10 point lead at the first media timeout in the first half. UAB then went
on a 14-4 run over the next 6 minutes to tie the score and finished the first half with a 31-28
lead. The second half was a tense affair with neither team able to gain a significant lead and
the majority of the CAT fans in the building jumping on the UAB bandwagon for the last few
minutes. For the game the score was tied 8 times with 17 lead changes.
UAB simply squashed the Cyclones on the boards out rebounding then 52 to 37 overall
and a whopping 19 to 9 on the offensive boards. State coach Fred Hoiberg noted that the
rebounding was just a killer to the Cyclones UAB was lead in scoring by Robert Brown who went
for 21 on 7 for 19 shooting, including 3 of 7 from three point land, and 4 of 4 from the line.
William Lee posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Iowa State was led by
Monte Morris with 15 points and All-American Georges Niang with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
The Blazers advance to face the winner of the second game, either SMU or UCLA, on Saturday
here in the Derby City.
