GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team wrapped up play at the 2015 Sand Dollar Snow Classic with two more wins Sunday. The Colonels defeated Bradley (12-7) and Alabama A&M (8-0) to finish 4-0 at the two-day tournament.
EKU, now 9-6 overall, put crooked numbers on the scoreboard in four of its six at-bats against Bradley (3-14). The Colonels came to bat in the bottom of the first inning trailing 3-0, but responded with five runs and never looked back. Sophomore Amber Murray highlighted the big inning with a two-out, two-run single to give Eastern the lead, 5-3.
Senior Shannon McQueen’s first home run of the season, a three-run blast in the second, stretched the Colonel advantage to 8-4.
Eastern continued to pile on the runs, scoring two each in the fourth and sixth innings. The final run came on a solo shot from freshman Paige Murphy.
The finale saw senior pitcher Leanna Pittsenbarger notch her second complete game shutout of 2015. The righty held the Lady Bulldogs to just two singles. Ariel Smith broke up the no-hitter with one out in the fifth thanks to an infield single. Pittsenbarger struck out a season-high 12 batters in the five-inning affair.
Eastern Kentucky would score all the runs it would need in the first when freshman Sarah Jackson’s three-run homer put the Colonels in front, 4-0.
Sophomore Krislyn Campos (.500), junior Kayla Joyce (.55) and Jackson (.417) all hit above .400 during the tournament. Four of Campos’ five hits went for extra bases featuring three doubles and one home run.
The Colonels return to action next weekend at the 2015 UNLV Rebel Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada.
