WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue women’s basketball team departs this Saturday for a three-game, 12 day tour of Italy and Switzerland as they prepare for the 2015-16 campaign. This is the second European trip for the Boilermakers under ninth-year head coach Sharon Versyp, set to provide key experience for a young squad this season.
With nine of the 14 Boilermakers on the roster listed as sophomores or freshmen, the three games and 10 extra practices for the Old Gold and Black will prove helpful as they prepare for bounce-back season in 2015-16.
“I can’t overstate how important this extra time together is for our team,” said Versyp. “Using this summer to help our young ladies grow together and gain valuable experience for the regular season will be crucial to our success.”
The Boilermakers started their summer practices on Sunday, July 19, and will have two more before departing for Rome on Saturday.
“Getting to know what makes each other tick is so important,” said senior guard April Wilson. “Having the opportunity to spend this extra time around each other is going to make us that much better as a team.”
The 12-day trip starts in Rome on Sunday as the team will see sights such as the Colosseum and Vatican City and begin preparing for its first game of the week. The Boilermakers will face Lithuanian University on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Palazzetto Sandro Pertini with a 6:30 p.m. (CET). They’ll move on to visit Florence on Wednesday before going to Sasomaggiore on Thursday for an afternoon contest with the Cameroon National Team. The trip continues in Venice and Lake Como on Friday and Saturday, and the final game of the week is set forSunday at 7 p.m. (CET) against TK Hannover at the Palazzetto Comunale in Inverigo, Italy. The Boilermakers will conclude the trip in Montreux, Switzerland on Tuesday and Wednesday before heading home to West Lafayette.
“I couldn’t be more excited to be in Europe for the first time, and I’m even more excited to be there with my teammates,” said sophomore Andreona Keys. “We have the opportunity to come together as a team and see each other in a different light, and this will do nothing but help us grow closer.”
Recaps and stats from each of the Boilermakers’ three games will be available on PurdueSports.com, while various other photos and videos from the trip will be shared on the team’s social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
