The Asheville Tourists broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning, and Helmis Rodriguez and Shane Halley teamed up for a six-hit shutout as the Tourists rolled to a 13-0 victory over the Lexington Legends Saturday night in front of 6,416 fans at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
The Tourists scored three runs in the fifth inning, and then sent 12 men to the plate in the sixth. Dom Nunez drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a double by Josh Fuentes. After Ryan Stephens walked to load the bases, Roberto Ramos singled to right field, scoring Nunez and Fuentes as Stephens moved to third. Max George’s bunt single brought Stephens home to make the score 6-0. A single by Omar Carrizales loaded the bases again, and after Torey Deshazier relieved Jake Newberry for Lexington, a wild pitch allowed Ramos to score. George came home on a sacrifice fly by Luis Jean, and Carrlzales scored on another wild pitch, giving Asheville a 9-0 lead.
Carrizales hit a two-run homer in the seventh, and the Tourists added two runs in the eighth, one coming on a solo homer by Drew Weeks.
Rodriguez (7-3) worked the first seven innings and got the win. He allowed six hits, no runs, struck out six batters and walked none. Halley walked one batter and did not allow a hit over the last two innings.
Legends starter Pedro Fernandez (4-1), who gave up the first two Asheville runs, suffered his first loss of the season.
Game two of the four-game series will be played Sunday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
