Pro Sports – Legends take second straight over Savannah

lexington-legends-logoThe Lexington Legends broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the top of the ninth inning and then held on for a 6-4 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats Friday night in Savannah.

Ryan O’Hearn led off the ninth with a single, and Elier Hernandez walked.  Wander Franco’s infield hit loaded the bases, and after Jimmy Duff relieved Alberto Baldonado for Savannah, Chase Vallot lined a single to left field, scoring O’Hearn with the tie-breaking run.    Two more runs scored when third baseman Jean Rodriguez made an errant throw on a force attempt after fielding a grounder hit by Brandon Downes.

Savannah got one run back in the bottom of the ninth on a triple by Rodriguez and an error by O’Hearn at first base on a ball hit by John Mora.  But Legends reliever Yunior Marte retired the next three hitters to seal the win.

The Legends took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a single by Hernandez, three walks and a ground out.  They added a run in the sixth when Corey Toups reached first base on a throwing error by Rodriguez, moved to second on a sacrifice by Humberto Arteaga, stole third and came home on a single by Hernandez.

Vicente Lupo’s solo homer in the bottom of the seventh gave Savannah its first run, and the Sand Gnats tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the eighth.   Two walks, a wild pitch and a ground out produced one run, and Tomas Nido’s sacrifice fly evened the score at 3-3, setting the stage for Lexington’s ninth-inning rally.

Marte (2-0), who entered the game at the start of the sixth inning, got the win.  Legends starter Foster Griffin pitched five shutout innings.  He allowed four hits, walked two batters and struck out six.

Baldonado (0-5) who relieved starter Martires Arias with two outs in the seventh, took the loss.

The Legends have won the first two games of the five-game series, which continues Saturday.  Game time is 7:05 p.m.
