Interview with MUTANT Monster Truck driver Steven Sims:

This is Ron Hamblin, Bluegrass Sports Nation and I am here with Monster Truck Driver Steven Sims. Steven is the driver of the Monster Truck Mutant. Steven if you do not mind, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Steven: I am 24 years old and I am from Virginia Beach, Virginia. I have been driving for 6 years now and I am a second generation driver. It is my second time coming in to Lexington and my first time in Mutant.

Ron: Steven, if you don’t mind, I am going to ask you a few questions, kind of rapid fire, you just answer with what ever comes in to mind. We will start off with why you chose to drive monster trucks at such a young age.

Steven: Well you know I am following in my dad’s footsteps. He started this whole deal when I was about 10 years old and every since I grew up around it. It’s kinda been my whole life, it is all I know. It is definitely what I love and what I want to do.

Ron: That’s an admirable thing especially since it is following in your fathers footsteps. Steven, what is your favorite track that you have been to?

Steven: For me, it would definitely have to be Anaheim. Somehow I have always had my best success there. It’s a different style track than we normally run, it is a baseball stadium, so it’s a little bit different of a course and I have always done my best there.

Ron: Since you mentioned Anaheim, tell us about the difference in Stadium tracks compared to smaller venues like Rupp Arena here in Lexington. Do you like the open Arenas compared to the smaller tracks?

Steven: For us drivers, it’s kind of a different style and the way we approach things. When we come in to these arenas, we have to drive really technical. We can pull off some of the moves you guys have been seeing like moonwalk and up on two wheels. We get the nice saves in there where as the big stadiums, it’s more big air and covering as much ground as you can, so it is just a different style of driving.

Ron: How many days a year would you say that you are on the road doing these events?

Steven: I am normally gone about 25 weekends a year. So I am about 20-25 weekends a year, that can be anywhere from Lexington, KY to China to Australia, we kinda travel the world. So I can be gone quite a bit.

Ron: Steven, one of the things some of the fans we talk to to try to get an idea on the questions, the biggest question that came up was how did you choose Mutant?

Steven: Mutant actually asked me if I would drive for them. Mutant wanted their truck to perform at a high level, I think that goes with the Monster Brand in and of itself. They try to recruit the best athletes and the ones that will put their name out there, so I actually got a phone call asking me if I could step in and become that third Mutant driver.

Ron: That’s is awesome Steven. I do have a question since you are going to be in Big Blue Nation in Lexington, coming up on May the 12th, who is your favorite basketball team in college basketball?

Steven: Oh my gosh,

Ron: We’re going to get you in a little bit of trouble.

Steven: I’m going to have to go with Duke. Duke basketball is going to have to be my favorite. I went to school in Carolina and I wasn’t a big follower but all my roommates and stuff were, so I started watching all of Duke basketball so I have to say I’m a Duke basketball fan.

Ron: I can give you a little bit of advice, with a little bit of humor here, don’t mention that when you get to Rupp Arena. Duke may be the most hated team Kentucky fans have. It’s all in good fun. People come out and they enjoy the show you guys put on and We are excited to cover that. We appreciate the fact that you took the time out to share a little bit with us. Steven, on behalf of Bluegrass Sports Nation, and Monster Truck fans throughout Kentucky, we would like to thank you for being with us look forward to seeing Mutant and all the other Monster Trucks at Rupp Arena on May 12th for the Monster Truck Triple Threat Series, Is there anything you would like to say to the fans before we close?

Steven: Absolutely, you guys please come out and see us. We will bring out 8 of the best Monster Trucks in the world to Lexington Kentucky. We have one big event, one night, we’re going to run these trucks in the ground, we don’t care, we don’t have to fix them for the next day, we got a whole week to get them fixed. We’re here to tear them up.

Ron: Thanks again Steven, we look forward to seeing you on May 12th.
