High School Sports – BluegrassPreps.com Football Rankings for 9-28

Bluegrass PrepsIs Paintsville or Beechwood #1 in Class 1A? That is the agonizing question for our rankings team this week. Beechwood holds on to #1 again this week. But for how long? Raceland and Russellville flip spots this week, but was Raceland more impressive than Russelville? Or did Russellville just deliver a lackluster performance? Other than Raceland and Russellville, all Class 1A rankings this week echo last week’s.

DeSales remains atop the Class 2A rankings this week. But there are still strong arguments to be made that Mayfield should be the #1 team. Teams in 2A performed as expected this week and the rankings reflect that, immobile versus last week in spots 1-8. Butler and Monroe County drop out this week, replaced by Leslie County at #9 and Shelby Valley at #10

Boyle County remains the Class 3A #1 this week, though Belfry could make a strong case for bumping the Rebels out of that spot when the Pirates take on the overall #1 team in West Virginia this week. Could a win, on the road, be the statement needed for Belfry to dethrone the Rebels? Caldwell County moves up to #4 this week after a 21 point win over Paducah Tilghman last week. Elizabethtown’s strong performance over Edmonson County last week valuts them to #5 this week. Bell County and Corbin flip positions, with Corbin #9 this week and Bell County #10.

While strong arguments continue to be made for South Warren to take the #1 spot in Class 4A, Johnson Central remains atop this week’s rankings. Will South Warren’s slightly stronger strength of schedule through this first part of the season bear out and earn them a #1 ranking in the weeks to come? Only a minor shake up in the middle, as Spencer County bumps Shelby County out of the #6 spot after Shelby County loses a close one to #4 Franklin County. At the bottom, Warren Central replaces Collins after Spencer County trounces Collins last week.

The teams in Class 5A also performed as expected for the most part, and the top 6 remain unchanged, with Bowling Green remaining #1 this week. Anderson County drops out of the top 10 rankings this week after losing to Paul Dunbar. South Oldham leapfrogs into the rankings this week at #9 , while Highlands remains tenuously perched at #10 after a crushing loss to 6A Simon Kenton last week. How much longer can Highlands remain in the top 10?

Folks, Class 6A looks to be solid at this point. The only loss in the top 10 last week was #9 PRP to #6 St. Xavier. This week’s top 10 rankings remain exactly the same as last week. Pleasure Ridge Park continues it’s tour of brutal games by traveling to Male this week. Trinity and St. Xavier square off for the annual showdown at Papa John’s. A lot should be answered about both teams after this game….or not…It’s almost always impossible to anticipate the outcome.
