(Kona, KY) – One man is dead and three others injured following a two vehicle collision on US 119 in the Kona community of Letcher County. Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard is investigating the collision which occurred around 5:40 a.m. Troopers with Post 13, along with officers with Jenkins Police Department, Letcher County Sheriff’s Office, Neon EMS, and Jenkins Fire Department responded to the scene to provide medical assistance and investigate the collision.
It was initially determined that a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 42 year old Kevin Stamper of Haymond, was traveling north on US 119. The car crossed into the southbound lane where it collided with a 2008 Chevrolet Pickup driven by 48 year old Michael Thacker of Pikeville. Thacker and two passengers, 40 year old Jason Baker, and 31 year old Thomas Miller, both of Pikeville, were transported to Whitesburg ARH for treatment of non life threatening injuries. Kevin Stamper was pronounced deceased at the scene by Letcher County Coroner Marty Baker.
Kevin Stamper was wearing a seatbelt at the time of this collision, and driver impairment is not believed to be a contributing factor for either driver, though toxicology results are pending. No autopsy will be performed on the victim. This collision remains under investigation by Tpr. Brandon Thomas with KSP Post 13.
