BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team has been picked by league head coaches and sports information directors to finish ninth out of 11 teams in the Ohio Valley Conference this season.
Defending OVC Tournament champion SIUE was picked to finish first in the poll, receiving 10 first place votes and 187 points. Defending regular season champion Southeast Missouri was not far behind in second with seven first-place votes and 184 points. UT Martin, the 2013 OVC regular-season champion, was picked third with four first-place votes and 150 points. Jacksonville State finished fourth in the poll, receiving one first-place vote and 141 points. Murray State (138 points), Morehead State (121 points), Belmont (99 points), Austin Peay (63 points), EKU (57 points), Tennessee Tech (38 points) and Eastern Illinois (32 points) rounded out the poll.
EKU went 4-14-1 (2-7-1 OVC) last season, finished ninth in the league standings and missed out on the OVC Tournament for the second consecutive year. However, the Colonels return all but one starter from last year’s team, including leading scorer Cassie Smith (seven goals, one assist in 2014) and OVC All-Freshman Team selection Emmi Carroll (five goals, one assist in 2014). The returning talent, along with 10 promising newcomers, has the Colonels very optimistic entering the 2015 season.
EKU will host Mercer in an exhibition game today at 3:00 p.m. and will travel to Wright State for an exhibition game on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
The Colonels open the regular season at Western Carolina on Friday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m.
