By: Tyrus York – Coming off a big early season win against a top 15 opponent on the road in Arizona State, the UK Hoops team welcomed Morehead State into Memorial Coliseum Wednesday night after the short turnaround.  Keeping the momentum going and avoiding a letdown, the Cats cruised to a big win, 112-57, getting off to a 3-0 start for the season.

Morehead was clearly outmatched, but coming into the game the Eagles led the country in scoring through their first two games, averaging 111 points. The problem for them was they did not lead the country in defense, something Kentucky exploited early and often by racking up 112 points of their own.

The big story of the night would belong to Makayla Epps who notched only the second triple double in UK Women’s Basketball history and the first comprised of points, rebounds, and assists. Leslie Nichols holds the other triple double with points, rebounds, and steals.

Epps’ stat line read 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists, and I can tell you she made it look very easy. Her basketball IQ is superior to most and despite not being the most athletic player on the floor, can take complete charge of any game.

Kentucky was in history making mode Wednesday when they had 3 players record a double-double (or better). Adding to Epps’ success, Alexis Jennings and Evelyn Akhator each had double doubles with Janee Thompson coming up 1 assist short of making it 4 players. That would have been the record, but instead it was the first time since 1989 that 3 players had double doubles or better.

Kentucky also saw the emergence of another potential great post player in Alexis Jennings. Her double-double consisted of a game high 28 points. She would add 13 rebounds and was clearly too much for the Eagles to handle down low.

Evelyn Akhator continued her great play with her second double-double of the season contributing 12 points and a game high 16 rebounds. She went down in the 4th quarter with a tweaked ankle and did not return, but we were told that the injury isn’t series and she would likely be back in practice on Thursday.

UK Hoops tied another school record for the most rebounds in a game with 67. A lot of missed shots coming their way as the high scoring Morehead State Eagles were trying to stay within reach.

Kentucky returns to action on Sunday against Colorado at 2 pm in Memorial Coliseum.
