Something about playing in New York brings out the best in a Rick Pitino coached Cardinals’ team. Louisville overpowered the Billikens in route to a 77 – 57 victory in the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational at the Barclays Center.
Mangok Mathiang started at the four spot for the Cardinals and had a career night finishing with a double-double. Mathiang, playing increased minutes due to Chinanu Onuaku’s foul trouble, finished with career highs with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Trey Lewis was huge for the Cardinals’ backcourt. He led the Cardinals with 22 points and also finished with 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
Damion Lee and Quentin Snider rounded out the double figure scorers for the Cardinals finishing with 10 points each.
St. Louis played strong in the first half trailing only 30 – 27 at the half. Mike Crawford hit 3 first half three pointers to keep the Billikens close. Crawford finished with a team-high 20 points.
Hot shooting and strong rebounding have been the forte for the Cardinals during their first five games. Louisville shot over 50 percent for the fifth consecutive game finishing at 53.1 percent. They also completely dominate the smaller Billikens’ team by an astounding 36 – 14.
The schedule gets a lot tougher this Wednesday as the Cardinals travel to the Breslin Center in East Lansing to take on the Michigan State Spartans.
