While all of BBN has been fretting over the Diallo decision and the Kroger corporate takeover, the UK Baseball team has been quietly and methodically winning games, mowing down traditional SEC powers and moving up the national polls en route to possibly the most magical season in program history. What’s making this team so special? What supernatural Gatorade have they been drinking? The same players who last year went .500 in the conference and missed out on post-season play suddenly have their sights legitimately set on Omaha. Continue reading UK Baseball – Blue Blooded Chemistry
Curiosity won’t kill these Cats, but expectations just might. In one of the most highly anticipated seasons in UK Football history, hopes are already running rampant across the Bluegrass State. Last year’s on-the-field successes together with another Mark Stoops/Vince Marrow recruiting bonanza have combined for an upcoming perfect storm of a triumphant gridiron campaign. Continue reading Great Expectations
The second weekend of the NCAA Tournament is the proverbial emotional roller coaster ride for die-hard Wildcat fans like me. I love the weekend and yet, I hate the weekend.
I love the exhilaration of knowing your team is one of sixteen teams still with a chance to win it all. I hate the realization that at any time during the weekend, your team can be sent packing, its season ended with a bad call or unlucky buzzer beater. Continue reading NCAA Tournament – Blue Memphis
What do Batman and Robin, John Wall and Eric Bledsoe, and Tyler Ulis and Jamal Murray have in common? They were dynamic duos who, when the chips were down, always found a way to beat the bad guys. To that esteemed group, I’m going to add two more heroic pairs of all-star backcourt tandems—UK guard combos that arguably could be the best in the history of their respective programs. Continue reading Dynamic Duos
University of Kentucky senior night celebrations were once so poignant and unique that even television networks felt compelled to cover them live. I remember Dick Enberg’s voice quivering with his signature “Oh my” immediately after he witnessed the festivities for the first time. Nowadays, with everybody staging their own versions of these farewell moments, the occasion has lost much of its luster. There’s simply not as much sentimentality, emotion, and glamour to trigger our jaded excitement levels. Continue reading Senior Night, “Oh My”!
During Kentucky’s recent slide toward “rock bottom,” everyone wants to know what’s wrong with the Cats. Anytime the team loses a single game, people invariably start asking questions. Whenever the team loses three out of four, then all of BBN immediately plunges into full panic mode. Unfortunately, I don’t have any of the answers. That’s for others above my pay grade and security clearance to figure out. I’m here simply to give you a taste of what it’s like to report on the action. Continue reading Here’s the Scoop
Are you looking for the perfect conversation starter at your annual Christmas party this year? Are you tired of all the Trump talk at holiday family get-togethers? Scared of gossiping about your boss around the water cooler at work? Continue reading College Football – Seasonal Highs and Lows
After the win over Cleveland State, John Calipari added another impressive item on to his coaching resume. His 123rd win against only 4 losses makes the Hall of Fame UK basketball coach the winningest coach in Rupp Arena history. Since arriving in Lexington in 2010, Coach Cal has also had success away from the friendly confines of the house that Rupp built, leading the Wildcats to four Final Fours and the coveted 2012 National Championship. Continue reading Cal-Speak
“Don’t ever quit your cattle on a stormy night.” That’s how Kentucky
Coach Mark Stoops responded after I asked him about the confidence level of his team prior to their trip down to Knoxville. After the stormy loss to the Georgia Bulldogs last weekend, I’m certainly not quitting my cattle and neither are the coaches. Unfortunately, the cattle may not have gotten the message as Tennessee shredded the Wildcats 49-36 on a perfectly crisp and sunny autumn afternoon in the heart of Volunteer Nation. Continue reading College Football – UK vs Tennessee – Quitting Your Cattle

Forgive me for being just a bit euphoric, but after Kentucky’s commanding 35-21 upset road victory over the Missouri Tigers this afternoon, the Wildcats are now officially in contention for the SEC eastern division crown. With an upcoming “sure-win” game with Austin Peay still on the schedule, bowl eligibility is a virtual certainty and the possibility of that long-awaited magical season is beginning to crystallize in the hearts and minds of BBN.
