As the season progresses, it seems as though there are four teams that have the ability to represent the eastern half of the state in the class 1A state finals. The preseason favorites Pikeville Panthers and Raceland Rams have not disappointed so far this year. Both teams have won games they should have and also competed against larger class schools as well. High School Football – Tigers will visit the Dogs on October 12, at 7:30pm

There is a rich tradition around the mountains when talking about Class A football programs. You immediately think about the Lynch East Main state champions of 1959, 60, 63, and 68. The Jack Hall led 1964 Elkhorn City State Champions knocked off Russellville at the old Stoll Field on UK’s campus 33-7. High School Football – Bulldogs Swat the Hornets 35-6

October 6, 2018 – Phelps, Kentucky – JJ Baker – Bluegrass Sports Nation Hazard Football Columnist

If you love road trips, then you’d love to be a Hazard Bulldog this season. For the fifth time in six games, the Bulldogs hit the road and traveled to Eastern Pike County to take on the Phelps Hornets. Phelps entered the game with a 4-1 record and was looking to ride some momentum after a big 52-0 win over Fairview and find a signature win for head coach David Jones. Since taking the program over in 2016, Coach Jones has shown steady progress with the Hornet’s football program going 4-6 in his first season, 5-5 last season, and had won 4 out their first 5 to start this season. High School Football – Phelps will Host District Opponent Hazard in a Thursday Night Game on October 4, at 7:00pm

October 3, 2018 – Hazard, Kentucky – JJ Baker – Bluegrass Sports Nation Hazard – Football Columnist

Just a few few years ago, the Phelps game was a way to get your starters a half of a game of live conditioning and a half of a game that allowed younger players to get some valuable in game experience against a varsity team. The game, even though it was a district game, was always a running clock affair. Fast forward to today and you have a Phelps team that has a record of 4-1 with wins over East Ridge, Sheldon Clark, Jackson County, and Fairview (a team that played in a state championship game only 6 short years ago in 2012, but vacated its wins due to ineligible players). High School Football – Preview of Hazard @ Pikeville A Match Up of Class A District 8 Foes

September 27, 2018 – JJ Baker – Bluegrass Sports Nation Hazard Football Columnist

One of the biggest in class rivalries in the East will have its first round this Friday as the Hazard Bulldogs make the hour journey to district foe Pikeville. For much of the last 10 years the region has ran through one of these two teams. As of right now that seems to be the way things will go again this year, barring an upset by an up and coming Phelps team. The two perennial powers are no strangers to each other. Both teams and coaching staffs are familiar with the others offenses and defenses, and like years past this one may end up being another battle. After their first loss of the year at the hands of the Somerset Briar Jumpers and an open week to fix problems, the Bulldogs were eager to get back on the gridiron Friday night against the Prestonsburg Blackcats. 1A Hazard (2-1) plays at home and tries to get back on track after a tough loss to Somerset. The Bulldogs host 2A Prestonsburg (0-4). Prestonsburg has not had the start new Head Coach Brandon Brewer wanted and this matchup with Hazard will not help things.
