It seems just like yesterday that the High School Football season started. 11 weeks later, the regular season is over and now the real fun begins as dozens of teams in the State have visions of making a run for a State Title in one of 6 Classes. Several Mountain teams are ready for their moment in the spotlight. Some teams are coming in red hot and some favorites are struggling at the wrong time. Kentucky opened their pre- season exhibition schedule with the Thomas More Saints. Although, the game wasn’t pretty UK still prevailed with a forty -two point victory, Kentucky 103 / Thomas More 61. Kentucky started 5 freshmen in the scrimmage starting #00, Quade Green, #03 Hamidou Diallo, # 04 Nick Richards, #5 Kevin Knox, and #25 PJ Washington. Kentucky fans have seen the Wildcats on the floor twice this season, Big Blue Madness, and the Blue and White game, both have been scrimmages amongst teammates. Belfry played host to the 2016 State Champions, Johnson Central, in what is a battle of two of the top teams in their respective classes. Belfry enters the game 8-1 and the top team in Class 3A, with their only loss being to West Virginia power Huntington on opening night. Since their opening night loss, Belfry has manhandled the rest of their schedule to a tune of 8 straight wins. Belfry has scored 403 points for a 50.6 per game average while giving up 96 points for a 12 point per game average. During my now over 40 (we will leave it at that) years of participation in competitive sports at the prep and college level on the gridiron and diamond, and three years of doing media at the local and national level, many games stick out. Not much changed this week with the top teams in the BSN coverage area. As teams tune up for their runs at a State Tournament, some have put themselves in tougher positions than others. As expected, the teams that advanced deep in the playoffs last season are once again at the top of their game and ready for the battle that is playoff football. In a rematch of last years Semi State Tournament, Coach Mark Dixon’s Hazard Bulldogs traveled to Paintsville to take on Coach Joe Chirico’s Paintsville Tigers. Both teams were trying to fine tune their teams for a run at a State Title. Paintsville was riding a four game winning streak which included back to back road wins at Lawrence County and at Fairview. Hazard had won three in a row after a disappointing loss to Somerset. Hazard is trying to make it back to the State Finals again and Paintsville wants to get their themselves and consider Hazard a huge roadblock.
