LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Three experienced assistant men’s basketball coaches have joined head coach Chris Mack’s staff at the University of Louisville, including Dino Gaudio, Luke Murray and Mike Pegues.
Pegues (pronounced puh-GEESE) has worked as an assistant coach with Mack for the past six seasons at Xavier, Murray has been an assistant coach with Mack for the past three seasons at Xavier, and Gaudio is a former basketball television analyst who has 23 years of collegiate coaching experience, including a stint at Wake Forest with Mack. Rivalry games bring a great deal of emotion from both the fans and the players alike. For fans, it is mostly and intense dislike for the opposing fan base. They live through the rivalry 365 days a year. For players, they do not want to lose bragging rights by losing to the rival. However, most of the players on this year’s Louisville and Kentucky teams did not grow up in the state so they don’t completely understand the intensity of the rivalry. At times this season the Louisville Cardinals’ offense has been quite offensive. Scoring droughts and shooting slumps have been the norm at times. However, that was not the case in the Cards matchup Saturday against their old rival Memphis as they beat a scrappy Memphis team 81 – 72 in Madison Square Garden.
