Bell County’s season came to an end on Friday in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs. The Bobcats fought through injuries and kept the game close for a half before Corbin pulled away for a 32-6 victory. Bell County ends the year with a 7-5 record while going 2-3 in the district.
The second round of the 2017 High School Football Playoffs went exactly as planned as all the Mountain favorites won their games. There was one pleasant surprise as Powell County used a goal line stand as time expired to defeat Casey County 44-41 to set up a home match against Corbin. The regular season of KHSAA high school football has concluded, and the playoffs have begun. Bluegrass Sports Nation continues our game of the week coverage, with the coverage of the state football high school playoffs. Tonight’s game of the week featured the battle of the Bobcats, Bell County vs Breathitt County competing in the class 3A playoffs. Both programs were once prominent programs with both winning several State Championships in Football, but have struggled recently. Bell County entered tonight’s game with a six win and four loss season, finishing in fourth place of their district. Breathitt County struggled early in the season losing the first five games, before winning four out of the next five. Breathitt County finished the regular season with a four win and six loss campaign, finishing as the district runner up. Belfry played host to the 2016 State Champions, Johnson Central, in what is a battle of two of the top teams in their respective classes. Belfry enters the game 8-1 and the top team in Class 3A, with their only loss being to West Virginia power Huntington on opening night. Since their opening night loss, Belfry has manhandled the rest of their schedule to a tune of 8 straight wins. Belfry has scored 403 points for a 50.6 per game average while giving up 96 points for a 12 point per game average.
