As a football fan, how could anyone not appreciate a game like this one. Two teams that were evenly matched battling it out for a state title. You have to go all the way back to 2014 to find a 4A state championship game that doesn’t have the Johnson Central Golden Eagles playing for a title. Since that time, the Golden Eagles have been on one of the best four year runs of any school, regardless of class. Over that span they have gone an astonishing 51-7. Head coach Jim Matney has put together a juggernaut of a mountain football program during that period and brought Johnson Central’s first state title home to Paintsville during the 2016 season. On Saturday, December 1st, the Golden Eagles will once again square off with a familiar opponent in the Class 4A Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl State Championship at Kroger Field.  For the third year in a row they will face off with the Wildcats of Franklin-Simpson. It all comes down to this.  48 minutes away from being crowned Kings of the Bluegrass.  You don’t get here unless you deal with adversity and handle your business.  In Class 1A, two teams have done just that.  The Beechwood Tigers and the Pikeville Panthers are set to dance for the Kentucky Class 1A State Championship tomorrow at 2:00 at Kroger Field. High School Football Playoff – UNFINISHED BUSINESS

November 29, 2018 – Casey Allen- Bluegrass Sports Nation High School Football Columnist

What a year it has been for the Redhounds of Corbin.  One year ago the Redhounds were licking their wounds after a heartbreaking loss at the hands of the Boyle County Rebels in the Class 3A State Finals.  The Redhounds spent the last 364 days grinding in hopes of getting back to tomorrow, the Finals. To get there….they would have to exercise a demon and beat those same Rebels who broke their hearts last season. Continue reading High School Football Playoff – UNFINISHED BUSINESS

The Pikeville Panthers will be taking the field this Friday at 2 pm as they take on Beechwood in the Class 1A State Finals.  By now, most of you already knew that.  Most of you are familiar with names like Christian Billiter, Connor Roberts, Zach Roberts, and Bradyn Hunter just to name a few, but there is a very important piece to this Pikeville Team that you may not have heard of.  That would be Senior Campbell Dawahare.             This is what the game is all about. Playing for the guy next to you with a common dream of winning a state championship. I can remember growing up playing football in the back yard and pretending I scored the winning touchdown in a state championship game. Only a select few get that opportunity. Only a hand full of players get to experience what it is like to play in a state championship game. Last year Raceland got to realize that dream as they defeated Pikeville on a last second field goal to send them to the state finals. Pikeville’s dream had turned into a nightmare. A nightmare that has played over and over in the minds of everyone in the community for a solid year. Continue reading High School Football Playoffs – Pikeville Advances

It was November 24th, 2017, when a young Pikeville Panther team made the trip up US 23 to Raceland for a Class 1A semi-final show down with the Rams.  After a 1-4 start, the Panthers had taken the State by storm with a 7-game win streak.  Raceland was coming off a huge upset victory over rival Paintsville.  Both were looking to punch their ticket to the state championship game.  The game was everything you could expect a State Semi-Finals to be and ultimately came down to a field goal by the Rams that catapulted Raceland to the State Finals.
