In a year where everyone was talking about Belfry, Corbin, Elizabethtown & Central as the favorites for the 3A crown, Boyle County quietly went about their business and finished 14-1 with a State Championship under their belt. Boyle’s only loss was to 2A Finalist Danville, early in the season and finished with 12 straight wins. Corbin, who was on a run of their own after defeating Central last week, in route to their 10th straight win. Corbin’s last loss was to 1A Champion Beechwood earlier in the season. Beechwood took on a surprising Raceland and made short work of them 41-0. Beechwood gave up a total of 27 yards to Raceland. Raceland had 19 yards rushing, 8 yards passing and 3 first downs. Well it is finally here. Championship week in High School Football. A season of hard work. Teams working through injuries to get back to the promised land. Teams surprising everyone to make it to the big dance. A repeat of last year’s championship games and revenge time for those knocked out of last years title hopes. Teams expected to be here, but unfortunately had to go home early and plan on “next year”. All great story lines for what has been a very memorable season. High School Football playoffs continued in week three of the KHSAA playoffs. Tonight’s Bluegrass Sports Nation game of the week featured the Hazard Bulldogs hosting district rival the Pikeville Panthers. Tonight’s match-up is a rematch from earlier in the year in which Hazard defeated the Panthers 38- 26 on this very field. Bell County’s season came to an end on Friday in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs. The Bobcats fought through injuries and kept the game close for a half before Corbin pulled away for a 32-6 victory. Bell County ends the year with a 7-5 record while going 2-3 in the district.
The second round of the 2017 High School Football Playoffs went exactly as planned as all the Mountain favorites won their games. There was one pleasant surprise as Powell County used a goal line stand as time expired to defeat Casey County 44-41 to set up a home match against Corbin.
