Football Rankings 8-22

With the excitement of Week 1 and the anticipation of a new season upon us, we were not left disappointed by an exciting slate of early season games. Though it is hard to project a State Champion based off such an early season result, some of the usual suspects such as Trinity, Bowling Green, Mayfield, and South Warren all set the tone with impressive victories. As we turn toward Week 1 another slate of Bowl Games and Cross-Class battles will once again highlight the festivities, but we will also see some Intra-Class matchups specifically featuring some of the best 1A and 3A, and 5A teams.

No class will have as much clarity toward the pecking order as Class 1A with a pair of match-ups featuring Top 10 teams. The Top 4 teams all step up in class to challenge themselves this week in their non-district slates. Hazard survived a scare against fellow 1A Pineville early before separating themselves against the Mount Lions, they will face their second straight 1A foe with #10 Fairview. Frankfort took a similar path by escaping a game Paris squad and will now look to do the same against Paintsville.

Class 1A
1. Pikeville vs. 5A Letcher County Central (8/27)
2. Russellville at 3A Fort Campbell
3. Beechwood vs. 2A #10 Lloyd Memorial
4. Raceland at 4A Ashland
5. Hazard vs. #10 Fairview
6. Paintsville vs. #7 Frankfort
7. Frankfort at #6 Paintsville
8. Ky. Country Day at 2A #7 Lexington Christian Academy
9. Nicholas County vs. 3A Pendleton County
10. Fairview at #5 Hazard

For the most part the Top 10 of 2A held their own in Week 1 with 8 teams going on to win their match-ups. The two lone losses were #2 CAL against the bigger and deeper 6A Simon Kenton Pioneers and Owensboro Catholic against the larger powerhouse from Indiana, Evansville Mater Dei. The week’s most impressive result was Newport Central Catholic who crushed a ranked Scott team and left little doubt. This week each of the Top 5 teams will play competition from Class 5A or 6A. Lloyd Memorial bumped Murray with a solid showing against Walton-Verona, but their new found ranking will quickly be tested by 1A power Beechwood.

Class 2A
1. Mayfield vs. 5A Marshall County
2. Christian Academy- Louisville at 6A Eastern
3. DeSales at 6A Butler
4. Danville vs. 5A #9 Southwestern
5. Newport Central Catholic at 6A Cooper
6. Covington Holy Cross vs. Walton-Verona (8/27)
7. Lexington Christian Academy vs. 1A Kentucky Country Day
8. Owensboro Catholic at 6A Daviess County
9. Butler County vs. 3A Edmonson County
10. Lloyd Memorial at 1A #3 Beechwood

It was an entirely different story in 3A where only four of the Top managed to emerge from Week 1 with a 1-0 record. Central, Caldwell County, Paducah Tilghman, and Boyle County all stepped up to challenge strong large class programs and came up short. With that said, Week 0 was not without glory as Garrard County both knocked off ranked teams from higher classifications. This week is a stellar slate as 7 of the Top 10 take on ranked foes including a showdown between the #2 and #4 teams when Central and Corbin meet up.

Class 3A
1. Belfry vs. 6A Tates Creek
2. Corbin vs. #4 Central
3. Lexington Catholic vs. 6A #5 St. Xavier
4. Central at #2 Corbin
5. Boyle County vs. 6A #3 Lafayette (8/27)
6. Caldwell County vs. 4A #5 Franklin-Simpson
7. Waggener vs. 4A #7 Knox Central at Corbin
8. Garrard County vs. 5A Madison Southern
9. Paducah Tilghman at 6A #9 Central Hardin
10. Russell at 4A Greenup County (8/27)

It was all about early season shuffle in Class 4A as six different Top 10 teams opened the year on the losing end. Only South Warren, Hopkinsville, and Franklin-Simpson found victories opening the door for new blood to enter the rankings. Week 1 will be highlighted by Johnson Central’s first game as they defend the Bluegrass against one of West Virginia’s premier programs. Franklin-Simpson and Knox Central both pick a fight with Class 3A as they take on ranked squads from the smaller class.

Class 4A
1. South Warren vs. 6A Apollo
2. Johnson Central vs. Capital (WV)
3. Wayne County at 5A North Laurel
4. John Hardin vs. 6A North Hardin
5. Franklin-Simpson at 3A #6 Caldwell County
6. Hopkinsville at West Creek (TN)
7. Knox Central vs. 3A #7 Waggener at Corbin
8. Shelby County at 5A Grayson County
9. Collins vs. 5A Bullitt East
10. Rockcastle County vs. Bourbon County at Danville

The easiest rankings of the week to figure out comes in Class 5A after an impressive Week 1 that saw all but one of the Top 10 teams finish victorious, and only two of the Pre-Season Top 15 taking “L’s”. This week don’t expect the trend to continue as Pulaski County, Southwestern, Fern Creek, and Owensboro all face stiff tests. The marquee game though is one of more cannibalistic nature as #3 Christian County will take a swing at the Champs #1 Bowling Green.

Class 5A
1. Bowling Green vs #3 Christian County
2. Fern Creek at 6A #7 Manual
3. Christian County at #1 Bowling Green
4. Highlands at 6A Campbell County
5. Owensboro at 4A Madisonville- North Hopkins
6. Covington Catholic at Oak Hills (OH) (8/25)
7. Pulaski County vs 6A #6 Scott County
8. South Oldham at Doss
9. Southwestern at 2A #4 Danville
10. Greenwood at 4A Allen County- Scottsville

It was perfection for the largest classification as every Top 10 team held form and left the weekend without a digit in the right handed column. #1 Trinity did the Bluegrass proud by taking down TN powerhouse Ensworth and several other teams made statements against Top 10 squads from lower classifications. This week expect essentially the same blueprint as Trinity again challenge a Volunteer State squad with a pedigree and five different Top 10 teams will have their mettle tested from top teams from the smaller classes.

Class 6A
1. Trinity vs. Brentwood Academy (TN)
2. Male vs. Ballard
3. Lafayette at 3A #5 Boyle County
4. Simon Kenton vs. Bryan Station
5. St. Xavier at 3A #3 Lexington Catholic
6. Scott County at 5A #7 Pulaski County
7. Manual vs. 5A #2 Fern Creek
8. Ryle vs. Henry Clay at Lexington Catholic
9. Central Hardin vs. 3A #9 Paducah Tilghman
10. McCracken County at 4A Warren Central
