(From KSP Post 13) (Jackson, KY) – Three Breathitt County men are dead following a single vehicle collision late Wednesday evening. Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard received a call advising of the collision on KY 3193, at approximately 9:20 p.m., on August 27th. Troopers from Post 13, along with Breathitt EMS responded to the scene.
Troopers determined that a Ford Ranger pick up truck was traveling north on KY 3193, when the vehicle swerved across the roadway and into a ditch on the opposite side of the road. The driver appeared to overcorrect while attempting to gain control of the truck, which caused the vehicle to overturn. The pick up entered a residential yard, where it came to rest against the dwelling there. Jonathan Campbell, age 24, Adam Fugate, age 31, and Pearl Armstrong, age 19, all of Jackson, were passengers in the bed of the truck. All were ejected during the collision, and were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Breathitt County Coroner. Joshua Thorpe age 20 of Jackson, was air lifted to University of Kentucky Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition, as was 25 year old Marcus Jones of Campton. Jones is listed in stable condition. The driver of the truck, Shawn Hardin, age 19 of Jackson, was arrested and lodged in the Three Forks Regional Jail. He has been charged with three counts of Murder, 2 counts of Assault 1st Degree, and one count of Operating a Motor Vehicle under the Influence 1st offence.
Autopsies will be performed on the deceased victims by the State Medical Examiners Office in Frankfort. Alcohol appears to be a contributing factor in this collision, and seat belts were not in use. This incident remains under investigation by Trooper Tony Russell with KSP Post 13.
